Shimano STEPS / EP error code
Shimano STEPS / EP error W011: Speed cannot be detected
Medium severity Service soon
Can I ride home with this error?
Ride with caution. Safe to ride, but assist is limited until the sensor is fixed.
What it means
The drive unit is not getting a speed signal. Assist may stop at a lower speed than normal (E6000: assist up to 25 km/h in top gear only).
Likely causes
- Speed sensor in the wrong position
- Wheel/disc-rotor magnet has come off or moved
- Damaged sensor cable
Symptoms
- Speed shows 0 or is wrong
- Assist cuts out early
How to fix it
- Check the spoke or disc-rotor magnet is still fitted and lines up with the sensor.
- Shimano's service guide says the sensor-to-magnet gap should be 3–17 mm.
- Turn the system off and on again.
- If it continues, contact your place of purchase or a bicycle dealer.
How urgent is it?
Fix the sensor soon so assist and speed readings work properly.
