Rad Power Bikes error 21: Abnormal current

Medium severity Service soon

Can I ride home with this error?

Ride with caution. Assist may cut out; you can pedal the bike without assist.

What it means

On colour displays Rad describes this as abnormal motor current. On LCD/LED/Rad UI bikes it often points to a problem with power from the battery to the controller, and can happen when the bike is pushed too hard (throttling up a big hill or carrying too much weight).

Likely causes

  • Overloading: long steep throttle climbs or too much weight
  • Dirty, wet or damaged battery contacts or tray
  • Loose battery or motor connector

Symptoms

  • Error 21 on the LCD or colour display
  • LED display: pedal assist level 0 flashes
  • Rad UI remote: 'E' with lit power bars

How to fix it

  1. Stop and turn the bike off; let the motor cool for a while.
  2. Turn the bike on again – this often clears it.
  3. Turn off, remove the battery and check the battery terminals and mounting tray are clean and dry.
  4. Check the battery and motor connectors are clean, dry and fully pushed together (pull straight apart, do not twist).
  5. If contacts or connectors are wet, dirty or damaged, or the error stays, contact Rad Power Bikes support.

How urgent is it?

Check connectors if a rest and restart do not clear it.
